The art of meeting strangers

Five small habits our regulars swear by, for anyone who finds a room full of new faces a little daunting.

After dozens of gatherings, we've noticed that the guests who leave with new friends aren't always the most outgoing. They just share a few habits.

1. Ask the second question

Everyone asks what you do. The guests who connect ask what got them into it, or what they'd do instead. The second question is where the conversation starts.

2. Stand near the bar, not against the wall

It sounds trivial, but people drift towards drinks. Stay where the movement is and conversations will come to you.

3. Introduce two people to each other

The fastest way to feel at home in a room is to act like a host. If you've met two people who should know each other, introduce them.

4. Put the phone away

We don't ban phones, but the best moments rarely happen while someone is scrolling. Take a photo of the view, then put it back in your pocket.

5. Follow up within a week

A short message saying you enjoyed the conversation turns a pleasant evening into a lasting connection. Most of the friendships that started at our gatherings began with exactly that.
